People often ask me the question, "Herb, why did you leave a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry of over 18 years to join Chick-fil-A?" The answer is clear and that is exactly why we are in business. To have a positive impact on the people I come in contact with each and everyday in my community and to provide an atmosphere where people can develop to serve others. We strive to provide a nurturing and enriching environment where our employees learn how to care and serve others.
I am a 1982 Clemson graduate and married my Clemson sweetheart Karil Harwell, a local Clemson girl who graduated from Daniel High School in 1980 and Clemson University in 1984. Through the years, my career in the pharmaceutical industry took us from Columbia, SC to Chicago, IL and on to Charlotte, NC and finally Greenville, SC. Karil has stood along beside me supporting my career and raising our two sons, Michael and Christopher, and pursuing her career in landscape design and consultation. During my term as a pharmaceutical sales and business manager, I started using Truett Cathy's first book, It's Easier To Succeed Than To Fail to train young sales people. It was through Truett Cathy's book and the testimonies of several Chick-fil-A operators that brought me to pursue a career with Chick-fil-A.
Our opportunity to join Chick-fil-A came several years after talking with the folks at Chick-fil-A. Beginning my career with Chick-fil-A I accepted the Owner/Operator position at the Chick-fil-A on Laurens Road in Greenville, SC. Karil closed her Landscape Design business to join along side me on a new venture where we could have a positive impact on others. Our sons, Michael and Christopher have also been a great support with my new career and have personally grown from the opportunities Chick-fil-A has to offer.
In the fall of 2003, we were given the opportunity to open a new Chick-fil-A in the Seneca/Clemson Community. It has been mine and Karil's desire for many years to return to this area and it is truly our pleasure and honor to be "serving the foothills". If you have not visited our store, please drop in and experience Chick-fil-A of Seneca.
